About the Role

We are currently seeking a committed and experienced Special Education Teaching Assistant to work with two children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in a primary school in Colchester. The children may have additional sensory needs and exhibit behaviours consistent with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). The role requires a patient, understanding, and proactive individual who can manage challenging behaviours, including kicking, hitting, and running, while providing a safe and supportive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

– Provide one-on-one support to two children with ASD, catering to their individual educational and emotional needs.
– Implement and follow individualised education plans (IEPs) and behaviour management strategies.
– Assist with sensory activities and interventions to help manage sensory needs.
– Use positive reinforcement techniques to encourage desired behaviours.
– Ensure the safety of the children at all times, particularly when managing incidents of running, hitting, or kicking.
– Collaborate with classroom teachers, special education coordinators, and parents to create a cohesive support network.
– Maintain accurate records of the children’s progress and any incidents that occur.
– Foster a positive, inclusive, and stimulating learning environment.


– Previous experience working with children with ASD and behavioural challenges is essential.
– Knowledge of sensory integration techniques and behaviour management strategies.
– Strong communication skills and the ability to build trusting relationships with children, staff, and parents.
– Patience, resilience, and a calm demeanour under pressure.
– Relevant qualifications in Special Education, Child Development, or a related field are desirable.
– A valid DBS check or willingness to undergo a DBS check prior to starting the role.
