About The Job
This is a SEN School job.
Contract Duration: Supply
Contract Type: Supply - Hours: 8:30 - 15:30
Age groups: Primary & Secondary School
We are seeking caring, dependable, and dedicated Daily SEN Teaching Assistants to work on a supply basis in one of our specialist SEN schools in Northampton. This is a varied and rewarding role, with every day presenting different challenges and opportunities. Cover may be needed for a single day, but it can also lead to working blocks of days or weeks. It is essential that children feel safe and supported, so reliability and commitment are key. While supply staff will not be responsible for personal care duties, many students have a wide range of medical, academic, and complex needs, including ASD, ADHD, Down Syndrome, and some who are non-verbal, requiring alternative communication methods. Cheerful, playful, and animated assistants tend to thrive in this environment, engaging students proactively even when they appear disengaged. This is a challenging role, particularly for one-off days, but the more regularly you work in this setting, the easier it becomes as children become familiar with you and you learn the daily routines. Multiple support staff are typically present in each classroom, and children who struggle to cope in class can regulate in other areas of the school where they feel comfortable. Vigilance is essential to ensure the safety of all children and to monitor potential escape routes, which can be tempting for some SEN students. This role offers the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of children with complex needs while gaining valuable experience in a specialist educational setting.
The ideal candidate
Experience working or volunteering with children in an educational setting is essential, along with experience supporting children or adults with SEND, including ASD, ADHD, and emotional or behavioural difficulties. The ideal candidate will demonstrate flexibility, sensitivity, patience, and resilience when responding to the varied needs of learners. A Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification is beneficial but not essential, as we welcome applicants with the right attitude, commitment, and enthusiasm for supporting young people.
