About The Job
This is a SEN School job.
Contract Duration: Long-term
Contract Type: Long Term - Hours: 08:30-3:30
Age groups: Primary & Secondary School
We are looking for a compassionate and committed Learning Support Assistant to join a warm, relationship‑driven SEND provision that supports children with SEMH, autism, communication needs and developmental trauma. The school is built around calm, predictable routines and a nurturing approach. In this role, you will build trusting relationships with pupils who may find school overwhelming, offering consistent emotional support, co‑regulation and clear, reassuring communication. You will work closely with children both 1:1 and in small, nurture‑based groups, helping them to develop emotional vocabulary, communication skills and independence at a pace that meets their needs. The classroom environment is structured but gentle, with a strong focus on understanding behaviour as communication and responding to pupils with empathy and clarity. You will use supportive language, visual aids, routines and therapeutic strategies to help children stay regulated and ready to learn. You’ll also collaborate with teachers, therapists and pastoral staff, contributing to a joined‑up approach that places each child’s wellbeing at the centre of their school experience. In return, you will join a friendly, supportive team that values its learning support staff and invests in continuous professional development. Training in areas such as SEMH, autism, trauma‑informed practice, communication strategies and de‑escalation is readily available, and there are clear pathways for progression into specialist roles, HLTA or teacher training. This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who believes that strong relationships and consistent, compassionate boundaries can transform a child’s school experience.
The ideal candidate
While experience in SEND, youth work, care or education is beneficial, what matters most is your resilience, patience and the desire to make school a safe, positive place for every child. The ideal candidate will be calm, emotionally resilient and deeply committed to supporting children who may struggle with communication, regulation and relationships. You should be someone who can remain composed in challenging moments, respond with empathy rather than confrontation, and understand the importance of consistency, structure and clear boundaries. A genuine interest in trauma‑informed practice, SEMH, autism and child development is essential, as is the willingness to learn new strategies and adapt to the individual needs of each pupil. You will be confident using visuals, simple language and co‑regulation techniques, and you’ll bring a warm, patient approach that helps children feel safe, valued and understood. Above all, you will believe in every child’s potential—no matter their starting point—and be motivated by the small but powerful steps of progress they make.
