Are you passionate about making a difference in the lives of children with special educational needs? We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Learning Support Assistant to join our supportive team in a vibrant school located in Colchester. This role is especially suited for individuals who have experience working with hearing-impaired children and are proficient in British Sign Language (BSL) and/or Makaton.
About the Role:
As a Learning Support Assistant, you will be working one-on-one with a hearing-impaired child, providing tailored support both within the classroom environment and during various school activities. Your role will be pivotal in facilitating the child’s communication, learning, and overall participation in school life.
Key Responsibilities:
– Assist in the development and implementation of EHCPs specifically designed for the child’s needs.
– Facilitate effective communication using BSL and/or Makaton to support the child’s understanding and expression.
– Provide some personal care assistance, ensuring dignity and respect at all times.
– Collaborate with teachers, special educational needs coordinators (SENCOs), and parents to promote the child’s educational and social development.
– Employ inclusive teaching tools and methods to aid the child’s learning and integration.
– Monitor and record the child’s progress, adapting techniques as needed to maximise effectiveness.
Requirements:
– BSL Level 1 certification as a minimum; higher qualifications or experience in Makaton are highly desirable.
– Proven experience in supporting children with special educational needs, particularly with hearing impairments.
– Understanding and patience to manage the additional challenges faced by hearing-impaired children.
– Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
– A commitment to inclusive education and the principles of equality and diversity.
