Ever thought about how to become a Supply Teacher?

Have you ever thought about supply teaching? have you ever pondered “I’d love to help young people learn and be inspired, but I don’t know where to start?”

Have you ever wondered whether supply teaching is rewarding, and how to start a new career in schools?

Have you already had a successful career in a different field and now want to bring those skills to teaching?

4myschools has experience of placing many candidates into teaching careers who simply didn’t know where to start.

We can hold your hand through this process whether you have a degree or not and can help you launch your new rewarding supply teaching career.

There are many ways to become a supply teacher by working in schools without holding Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) before you start.

This blog explains the different routes to get into teaching and why supply teaching is so rewarding and achievable.

What about if I have never worked in a school before?

If you have never worked in a school before, a perfect route may be to start as a Cover Supervisor or a Teaching Assistant.

Don’t just take our word for it…

” I can’t express enough how enjoyable and stress-free it’s been working with 4myschools, they are so understanding, friendly and professional! I didn’t have any prior experience working in schools before joining 4myschools, but they took me on and I undertook 3 weeks volunteering and then immediately offered my first paid work as a TA! Overall, it’s been a very positive experience :)”

Very friendly and professional agency. In regular contact to fine tune needs and wishes. Often placed in most local schools to me as this is my priority. Also aim to keep sending me to same schools to ensure continuity for students too. Have been with same agency for over 10 years with a small break to work on a contract in a school. Would not leave them.

4myschools is an amazing agency to work for. The consultants are so friendly and helpful. They have found me work really quickly, and I appreciate that they actually gave me an option for two positions that were available – this meant that I could choose which role, school and year group suited me better. The recruiting and pre employment process was very thorough, which of course is so important for schools hiring. This means that this agency is a great choice for schools, which in turn means more work for 4myschool employees. Very reliable. The team at 4myschools were always on hand to answer any questions and guide me through each requirement during the employment process. I am currently really enjoying my first placement, it is a perfect match for me. Thank you 4myschools.

I am an experienced Teaching Assistant – what’s the next step for me?

Have you considered training to become a Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA)? Higher Level Teaching Assistants are in schools to support the teacher further than a general Teaching Assistant, and to be more involved in students teaching and learning.

  • As a Higher Level Teaching Assistant, you will:
  • Be able to promote positive behaviour
  • Hold the skills to create positive relationships between young people and staff
  • Be able to support child development in schools
  • Be able to evaluate learning activities
  • Be able to assist the Teacher in ICT, music and other activities.

I worked as a Teacher years ago; can I start as a TA or a Cover Supervisor?

Yes! 4myschools has helped many teachers who qualified years ago gain confidence by initially working as a supply TA or 1-1 supply tutor before fully returning to the classroom.

Alternatively, The Department For Education is keen for teachers to return back to the profession, either if you are returning to teaching or you’re qualified to teach but have never taught in a school. There is support available including one-to-one support from an adviser and free subject specialism training.

Why supply teaching is a rewarding career

Teaching is a job like no other. It’s unique in combining a rich range of professional skills with creativity, excitement and personal satisfaction – and a sense of making a real difference to the lives of children.

Teaching is a hugely rewarding career, not just in the lifelong impact teachers can have but also in terms of salary, pension and development.

Teachers Salary

The starting salary for a newly qualified teacher is £30,000. In Inner London the starting salary is more; at least £36,745. Teachers receive annual pay rises through an independent pay review process, and many teachers also see greater uplifts by progressing up the pay scales.

Teachers Pensions

Teachers’ pensions are among the best available – and they come with a 23.6% employer pension contribution, with teacher contributions starting from as little as 7.4% and a maximum of 11.7%.
